cmon_getsrs: (Weeeeeeell! That's... pretty special!)

This post is mostly for the sake of explaining Terry's canon and the events that has occurred in his life. The things that will be included in this post will be blurbs of personal history, blurbs of storyline plot, lots of youtube video links, wiki links, personal headcanon, and as the subject header says... lots and lots of 90s. Everything will be included from the first Fatal Fury game down to King of Fighters XIII (including the Maximum Impact series).

As a note, I will tend to fill in gaps of story within the Fatal Fury sections and copy/paste the stories of the Fatal Fury team in the King of Fighters' sections. The King of Fighters series mainly show cases Kyo Kusanagi, K', and Ash Crimson and their respective teams as main characters for the most part, but each teams participating in it do have their respective reasons and stories in the game. So I will attempt to make a timeline of sorts within this game, but there are some inconsistencies with the Fatal Fury timeline and the King of Fighters timeline. Why? Because marketing.

A summarized version between the KOF plots? Well... basically shit happens. A lot. There is never a good host for these tournaments, I swear. Also, each 'game' should have a plot summary for each year and so on, so go ahead and take a gander on that link.

If you want a TL;DR version, his wiki link is right here. And a video special that summarizes the events within the Fatal Fury series is here: https://youtu.be/o8YJdarcikg (Sorry for linking, having a hard time embedding video code on mobile.)

"Certainly they existed... Those blinded by ambition. Those consumed with vengeance. But here they do not exist. Only winners and losers here. For here, the MIGHTY rule!"

If you were to accurately describe what kind of person Terry Bogard is, you'd really have to first look at the different points of his life. When he was a young boy, both he and his brother Andy were orphans scraping on by in the mean streets of Southtown trying to survive another day in a criminally infested city. It was then when he and Andy were picked up by Jeff Bogard, a pretty known street fighter in Southtown that had adopted Terry and Andy, if not for the sake of giving the children hope and a chance to be raised with some faith that they could raised to be more productive members of society. It was because of this, Terry and Andy were given a chance at a better life thanks to Jeff and even met with his Master, Geese Howard, a power hungry crime lord that clawed his way to dominance in Southtown by either eliminating or assimilating any crime organizations that stood in his way. While Geese certainly did have the power, it was his greed and lack of any honor that he had that Tung Fu Rue refused to let Geese be his successor, and thus choosing Jeff to be the one to be his successor. This was a decision that came to be a horrible back lash as Geese, many years later, appears himself to Jeff near Sound Beach in Southtown on one fateful day when he, Terry, Andy and Tung were walking down a street when a car suddenly stopped by in front of them.

It was then that Terry, at ten years old, saw the murder of his adopted father right before his eyes with him and Andy witnessing the horrific display at a distance with Tung Fu Rue at the sides. Terry, rushing to his father's side, was the one who sees Jeff's last moments alive and gives him two things that Terry will always treasure: His hat, and a pair of gloves that was once Jeff's personal ones. It was this life changing moment that Terry wanted revenge for his father's murder right then and there, but it Tung Fu Rue persuaded the boys that if they wanted to have their revenge then they needed to train themselves to the utmost limit. Fighting Geese as he is now will certainly kill them and makes their father's death even more meaningless.

With both bitter feelings of resentment, but understanding fully of their father's Master's words, they both agreed to as he said so that the spirit of their father could rest knowing that his murderer will have paid for his crimes. Andy, through using some of Tung Fu Rue's contacts, went to Japan to train in the art of the Shiranui Style Ninjutsu and an empty-handed form of combat called Koppouken by Hanzou Shiranui. Terry, on the other hand, stayed behind in Southtown and used what forms of combat he had learned from his father, from Tung Fu Rue in the art of Hakkyokuseiken, and by what manners of survival and street fighting by traveling to other parts of the world. Both boys fighting and giving everything they got for their sake of revenge eventually honed, tempered, and forged themselves in their fighting craft and hurdling over any challenge they faced.

Ten years later...

Fatal Fury: King of Fighters

Terry and Andy soon reunite with each other after ten years have passed. Time has evidently changed them both with obvious skill and talent that they show through their training. It also around this time that Terry had met with an acquaintance of Andy's when he was training, the Muay Thai Kickboxing Champion Joe Higashi. It was actually through this chance encounter that they've learned that Geese was holding a fighting tournament called The King of Fighters as a means to recruit new powerful fighters under his organization while Southtown was still brimming with corruption and violence. The perfect setup for the notorious kingpin of crime like Geese Howard. It was also because of this encounter that the brothers were able to form a steadfast friendship with Joe as the three formed to be a team that would soon become legendary... The Lonely Wolves.

It was said that even though many fighters had taken part of the tournament before, no one was able to surpass Geese's right hand man, Billy Kane, in a match. The man was said to be unrivaled by none and was the defending champion of the King of Fighters tournament. That is until Terry Bogard had entered the scene. Granted Billy was pretty formidable, the fangs of the Lone Wolf had ripped right through his defenses and dominated the former champion. All the meanwhile, Geese had not only observed Terry as he progressed through the tournament, but ordered his underlings to capture and bring the son of Jeff Bogard to him to deal with him as he did to his father. It was finally a chance for Terry to get his revenge for his father's death. And he took it.

September 3rd, 1992, Geese Howard is reported to be dead after falling off a skyscraper. Because of this, a new legend was born that day. There is a new hero in town that has toppled the Kingpin of Southtown and lived to tell about it. The legend of the Hero of Southtown. "The Legend of the Hungry Wolf."

Fatal Fury 2: The New Battle

Not too long after, the news of Geese's death had become widely spread within the underground syndicates. Geese Howard is not only a ruthless man, but one that has acquired great power both as a fighter and as a crime lord. The fact that anyone could beat him was preposterous... and when the news had reached the ears of Wolfgang Krauser, the half-brother of Geese that had plotted to dethrone him from the beginning, this all sounded all too interesting for the Emperor of Darkness. In hopes of defeating Geese via proxy by defeating the 'champion' of the King of Fighters tournament, he decides to host the King of Fighters tournament in a more international level this time around. A first time for the fighting tournament! And when fighters across the world had began to gather around to participate, it was no surprise that the three Lonely Wolves would make their appearance as well!

This time around, familiar faces were seen as well as new ones were introduced. Raiden, now renamed as Big Bear and removing his mask and using a different personality for the ring as a pro-wrestler, has returned and mending bridges with the Bogard brothers and Joe Higashi. Billy Kane, returning even after Geese's reported death, comes back to extract his revenge on the Lonely Wolves. And new faces such as Kim Kaphwan, a Tae Kwon Do master from Korea, searching for stronger opponents to improve himself and spread his love for justice, and Mai Shiranui, another practitioner of the Shiranui Style of Martial Arts as well as Andy's love interest all come to the ring for many different reasons. But in the end, Terry reaches to the finals. While his drive for revenge is gone, it was because of this tournament that had sparked something new within Terry: The love for battle. To feel truly alive when he is fighting.

And because of that, Wolfgang Krauser too had underestimated what some kid from Southtown was capable of. And just like Geese before him, Krauser too had been defeated by Terry Bogard. While the shame of suffering his first lost was too extreme for Krauser, the Emperor of Darkness soon took his own life after Terry had left. This act alone had solidified Terry as a legend among the fighters across the world. Even though he acts more humble about it, the whole experience had unleashed a new thrill to Terry Bogard. To search for other fighters to improve his own skill and better himself. The harder the opponents, the more fun he'll have!

Fatal Fury 3: Road to the Final Victory

Terrible rumors had been going around in Southtown since Wolfgang Krauser's defeat. Rumors that a Yakuza thug had made his base of operations somewhere in the city. Rumors of a collection of the sacred scrolls of Jin that could grant the possessor of all three scrolls immortality. And worst of all, the absolute terrifying rumor that was eventually proven to be true in the end by everyone, including Terry.

Geese Howard is alive. And he is after those sacred scrolls. Geese held possession of two scrolls. One stolen ever since the defeat of Jeff Bogard, and with Krauser now dead that had possessed the second scroll, there was only one more left to go. And it has been reported that the possessors of the last Jin scroll are now in Southtown, along with the Yakuza gangster, Ryuji Yamazaki, acting as their body guard. With all of these factors plus Geese making his move to not only claim for the scrolls himself and a claim back to his empire, it all looks like Terry, Andy, and Joe will once again take their fight to the streets and investigate matters in their own hands. Along the way, they meet many new faces and more help along the way, including the Mary Ryan aka Blue Mary and Hon Fu, a private detective and a detective that was looking into the matters in regards about Geese and Yamazaki respectively and how they are involved in this new plot about the scrolls.

Despite with the clashes against Yamazaki, and once again defeating Geese when confronted against each other since their last match, Terry soon finds himself facing against the two direct descendants of the Hakkyokuseiken style of martial arts, the twins Jin Chonrei and Jin Chonshu. Even though it was a difficult task to take on both brothers at once, in the end, Terry did manage to secure the win against the two brothers. However in the midst of the confusion, Geese was able to steal the last scroll that the Jin twins had possessed. Now with all of these scrolls in Geese's possession, the greatest fear came to everybody in Southtown. The Kingpin now has all of the scrolls of immortality, and Southtown would soon find itself in the shadow of Geese Howard once again.

It was also at this moment, Terry soon finds a young boy that would soon become a major important person in his life in South Park: Rock Howard, Geese Howard's son.

Real Bout Fatal Fury

Now with Southtown back in Geese's control, yet still feeling the bitterness of the defeat again by Terry Bogard, Geese once again decides to settle things once and for all by finishing it just as it all began: Hosting a King of Fighters tournament right in Southtown. Inviting all fighters that had once taken part of the tournament whether it was from Geese or from Krauser to be invited. And of course, an invitation to Terry was given out with one extra message.

"I'll be waiting."

With his invitation clenched tightly to his hand, Terry then realized what Geese had planned to do with the scrolls. Nothing. The fact that Geese became the first man in 2,000 years to claim all three scrolls was enough to send every fighter in Southtown on edge along with the fact that the reason why he claimed them was so that the scrolls won't be used against him. And that along was enough.

This time, it wasn't about revenge or avenge Jeff's death. At this point, it was all about settling the vendetta between two titans: The Hero of Southtown, Terry Bogard versus the Kingpin of Southtown, Geese Howard.

It was not only a brutal fight, but a long and tough one. Not one fighter was willing to let the other get an edge. But in the end, Terry was able to once again dethrone the Kingpin with a final attack and knocking Geese out of the skyscraper of Geese Tower, just like many years ago when the two first clashed. In the attempt to at least spare Geese's life, Terry reached out to grab for Geese's hand to save him. But Geese refused for Terry's help and wrenched his hand from Terry's grasp... leaving the man plummeting down to the ground laughing all the way down.

It was a brutal end to a brutal fight, but it was confirmed for certain. Geese Howard is dead. Just within over 15 years, their feud had finally came to this end.

It was also at that point that Terry had met the seven year old Rock. Not feeling hatred or pity for the boy, Terry still decided to take Rock in under his wing and had let him follow him along his travels and train him. A simple act similar to how Jeff Bogard found orphaned children experiencing a hard time, Terry too had reached out his hand for the young Rock Howard to raise him the best way he could as the two began their ten year journey together.

And Rock, a boy who lost his mother from illness that his father never did to help her and loathed his father to the very pit of his core, realized that he was all alone at that moment. And accepted Terry's offer.

Garou: Mark of the Wolves

Ten years has passed since the events in Southtown had happened. Since the event, a new city had emerged called Second South, also known as Second Southtown, that rose from the ashes of Geese's rule. Yet even so, Second South soon found itself continuously growing back to the roots when Geese's rule was still alive; Crime began to rise and the many gangs that had infested the streets had made their return. Second South's police force as well as fighters from the old guard still do what they can, but in the end, they could only do so much.

It was also around this time that Terry and Rock had received their invitations to take part in the revival of the King of Fighters tournament, also known as the King of FIghters: Maximum Mayhem, hosted by the mysterious Kain R. Heinlein. While it was all still the same song and dance for Terry, it was actually Rock that was given a special notice with his invitation.

"There is something I need to tell you about your mother."

Regardless of who progresses, the two made sure to participate at least for Rock's sake to have any closure with any of his family.

Canonly, Rock's ending takes place as the winner of the events, as he teams up with Kain to learn more about the truth while asking Terry to wait for him when Rock is done with everything, but the discussion between Terry and Kain in Terry's ending puts things into perspective for the Hungry Wolf. People today aren't like how they were back in the old days, and society has truly gone dark and crooked even with the declaration of Second South becoming a city-state.

But in the end, Terry still loves this town. Its where he grew up and where he had met many challenges in life, now showing that he can at least make his presence for the better in it since even if the people are different now, it's all about heart and how you go with your life.

Okay first off, WARNING FOR MASAMI OHBARI ART and 90s dubbing. Secondly, a thing to keep note of is that a lot of the OVAs are different compared to the game's canon, so I tend to headcanon things that the animes show as part of game!canon's Terry's personality.
